Luma
Generative image and video workspace built around Luma Ray, reference-led creation, cinematic video, editing, and production APIs.

TL;DR
- Best for exploring cinematic motion from prompts, still images, and visual references with current Luma Ray models.
- The current product is Luma; Dream Machine is the legacy name retained in this page's URL for continuity.
- Quality is highly variable; a good clip may require many charged attempts.
- Use it to produce selected shots, not to assume a whole finished film arrives from one prompt.
Luma is a generative visual workspace spanning images, video, creative agents, and production APIs. Luma's September 2026 guidance identifies Ray3.2 as its current video model and explicitly treats Dream Machine as a legacy model name. The older name remains in this URL because buyers still search for it, but the evaluation below covers the current Luma product.
What Luma does well
Image-led generation gives more compositional control than starting from text alone. Current Ray workflows support cinematic prompt-to-video, image-to-video, modification, and production output. Luma also exposes an API for teams building generation into a product rather than working only through the creative app.
Where it falls short
Output variance remains the business problem. In a historical Dream Machine Reddit thread, one paying user described 3 of 14 attempts as “incredible” and the rest as okay or unusable. Current models are newer, so that report is not a present-day benchmark; it still illustrates why a showreel is not a cost model. Run a fresh pilot on the exact current Ray mode and plan.
Complex object interaction, logos, readable text, and continuity across shots remain failure-prone. Generate short components, lock approved frames, and finish continuity, sound, and edit elsewhere.
Bottom line
Choose Luma for image-driven cinematic shot exploration and current Ray workflows. Choose Runway for a broader creative toolset, or an editor-first product when the source material already exists.
