- Also available on web, iOS, Android, Mac, and Meta glasses.
- Handles questions, current research, files, voice, shopping, and image creation.
- Everyday use is free; Meta has not published a stable subscription starting price.
- Availability varies by country, language, app, and rollout stage.
Meta AI is Meta's general-purpose assistant. It appears as a standalone web and mobile product and inside WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, and Facebook. The current assistant is powered by Meta's Muse Spark family of models. Meta AI is the product; Muse Spark is the underlying model family, and the newer Muse personal agent is a separate product.
Decision snapshot
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Primary interface | Standalone assistant plus integrations across Meta apps |
| Best use | Quick questions, image creation, shopping, and group-chat assistance |
| Current model family | Muse Spark |
| Starting paid price | Not publicly stated; everyday use remains free |
| Main trade-off | Uneven feature availability and limited control over its placement in Meta apps |
What Meta AI does well
Distribution is the practical advantage. A WhatsApp or Instagram user can ask a question, generate an image, or get a recommendation without moving the conversation into another service. The standalone app and website add file analysis, research, voice, scheduled tasks, documents, presentations, and shopping assistance in supported markets.
Meta AI can also use current web information and public content from Instagram, Facebook, and Threads. That social context can help with products, creators, restaurants, and trends that are poorly represented in conventional search results.
Where it falls short
Meta rolls features out by country, language, device, and surface. A capability shown on the product page may not yet exist in a particular WhatsApp account or region. Subscription prompts can appear after compute-intensive limits, but Meta does not publish one dependable starting price.
Its placement inside existing apps is also contentious. Some WhatsApp users want a clear way to hide or disable the assistant. The convenience only works when the integration is wanted; otherwise it becomes extra interface competing with normal search and messaging.
What users report
In a Reddit thread about Meta AI in WhatsApp, u/SilenceOfTheAtom wrote: “In a group chat, if there is a debate, you can directly ask AI for clarifications.” Many other participants said they rarely used it or disliked being unable to remove it. The divide is less about raw model capability than whether an assistant belongs inside a messaging app.
Bottom line
Choose Meta AI when convenience inside Meta's apps matters more than having a specialized AI workspace. Choose a standalone research or writing assistant when you need consistent features, clearer plan boundaries, or tighter control over where the assistant appears.
